SJU Picked Second in MIAC Preseason Football Poll

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Saint John's University football team was picked to finish second out of nine teams in the 2018 MIAC Preseason Coaches' poll released Thursday, Aug. 23.

St. Thomas earned seven of the nine first-place votes and 63 total points to finish first in the poll. The Johnnies, who are ranked 11th nationally by D3football.com, received the other two first-place votes and 58 total points to finish second, 10 points ahead of third-place Concordia.  

The Johnnies ended the 2017 season ranked No. 14 nationally and finished with a 9-2 record (7-1 MIAC).

Conference play opens on Sept. 15 and runs for eight weeks. The Johnnies begin the conference schedule with a trip to Gustavus Adolphus in St. Peter. SJU hosts Carleton Sept. 22 for Family Weekend and Homecoming, and visits Augsburg (Sept. 29) and Bethel (Oct. 6) before the annual Johnnie-Tommie game, which is also SJU's Tackle Cancer game, Oct. 13 in Collegeville. 

SJU begins its 108th football season Sept. 1, the first of six home games this fall, against Wisconsin-Stout. The non-conference game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. kickoff at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville.

MIAC head football coaches voted for every team in the conference except their own. Points were assigned for each vote (eight for a first-place vote, seven for second, etc.). Teams are ranked in order of highest point total to lowest, with vote totals listed and first-place votes shown in parentheses.
