ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's soccer dropped a 2-1 decision at St. Thomas on Tuesday, Oct. 2, in St. Paul.
UST (7-2-1, 3-1-1 MIAC) built a 2-0, first-half lead with a pair of goals off free kicks. Andrew Stuempfig opened the scoring in the 25th minute following a deadball kick at midfield, while Jack Barry gave the home team a two-goal lead with 42 second remaining in the opening stanza.

Thomas Bell (Little Falls, Minn.) cut the Tommies' lead in half with his second collegiate goal in the 56th minute for SJU (6-2-1, 3-2-0 MIAC). A free kick by sophomore midfielder
Paul Wadsworth (Tacoma, Wash./Stadium) glanced off a UST player and bounced to Bell, who tucked in to the far-left cheek of the net.
The Johnnies continued to battle and nearly tied the game late. Sophomore midfielder
Tommy Picka (Victoria, Minn./Chaska) hit the crossbar in the 84th minute and UST goalkeeper Aidan Hogan denied Wadsworth on a bullet shot from just outside the box three minutes later.

Nicholas French (Waterford, Wis.) made three in the loss, his first of the season (3-1-0 record).
The loss was the first for SJU at St. Thomas since 2010.
The Johnnies travel to take on Saint Mary's at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, in Winona.
