COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's claimed five of the first six collegiate finishes to win the seven-team SJU Invitational (8k) on Friday, Sept. 9.
The Johnnies won the meet with a total of 18 points, followed by MIAC members Macalester (68) and Gustavus Adolphus (73).
Senior Ruairi Moynihan (Fargo, N.D./South) finished first among the collegiate runners, a step ahead of fellow senior Andrew Clasen (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) at 27:16.
Gustavus' Mark Bartley claimed third (27:18), while sophomore Nate Engel (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and junior Matt Scherber (Royalton, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) followed close behind in fourth (27:33) and fifth (27:41), respectively. Senior Joe Gair (Coon Rapids, Minn.) finished sixth (27:45) and sophomore John Subialka (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) took eighth with a time of 28:10. Senior Grant Cook (Duluth, Minn./East) rounded out the Johnnies' top seven in ninth (28:20).
Kelly Fermoyle '08 won the overall race with a time of 27:01.
The Johnnies were ranked third in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Central region rankings (Aug. 23) and No. 24 in the national preseason poll released Aug. 24.
SJU returns to action in three weeks at the Wisconsin-Eau Claire Invitational held Friday, Sept. 30. The race is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wis.
