Penalty Kicks, Missed Opportunities Doom SJU

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – St. Olaf scored two of its four goals on penalty kicks to defeat Saint John’s, 4-1 in a physical MIAC contest Saturday, Sept. 29 in Collegeville.

St. Olaf’s Bennett Kennedy scored a penalty kick at the 19:45 mark of the first half to give the visiting Oles an early 1-0 lead. The Oles’ Nate Swenson scored his fourth goal of the season on a feed from Bjorn Carlson with under four minutes left in the first period.

Junior Cam Christensen (Bismarck, N.D./St. Mary’s) scored his third goal of the season to cut the Johnnies’ deficit to 2-1 early in the second half.

The Oles’ John Zietlow answered with two second-half goals, one on a penalty kick, to silence the SJU comeback.

A total of 42 fouls (22-20 in favor of SJU) were called, including six yellow cards (5-1 in favor of SJU). SJU out-shot St. Olaf 24-11in the game, including a 12-10 advantage on goal.

The Johnnies (3-3-2, 1-3-1 MIAC) will travel to face Macalester on Saturday, Oct. 6. The game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Macalester Stadium in St. Paul.
