Johnnies Get Back on Track With 5-1 Win Over Bethel

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University out-shot Bethel 42-14 overall, 23-7 on goal, on way to a 5-1 conference win on Tuesday, Sept. 25 in Collegeville.

Just under 20 minutes into the game, senior A.J. Tufte (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) put the Johnnies on the scoreboard first with his first goal of the season with assists going to sophomore Eric Bell (Little Falls, Minn.) and junior Jason Daly (Eden Prairie, Minn.). Bethel’s Andreas Scott tied the game at 1-1 on a penalty kick at the 34:11 mark of the first half.

Junior Levi Lowell (Stillwater, Minn.) and sophomore Paul Keane (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) increased the Johnnies’ lead to 3-1 in the first half. Junior Brian Horst (Stillwater, Minn.) assisted on both goals for SJU, while junior Chris Schultz (Coon Rapids, Minn.) assisted on Lowell’s tally.

Schultz added his first goal of the season at the 76:11 mark of the second half. Freshman A.J. Sollom ended the scoring with his first career goal with less than four minutes left in regulation (86:18). Freshmen Andrew Lilly (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Colin Jacobs (Maple Grove, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for the Johnnies (3-2-2, 1-2-1 MIAC).

Senior Matt Sundberg (Wayzata, Minn.) made four saves in the first 45 minutes of play before being relieved by sophomore Matt Hasselstrom (Edina, Minn.), who made two saves in the final period.

Bethel’s Nick Kantor made 18 saves for the Royals (3-8-0, 0-3-0 MIAC).

Saint John’s will play host to St. Olaf this Saturday, Sept. 29. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at Durenberger Field in Collegeville.
