SJU Rallies to Earn First Season Win

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Saint John’s University’s soccer team scored two unanswered goals to earn its first victory of the season by defeating Nebraska Wesleyan, 2-1 on Sunday, Sept. 2 in Collegeville. 

Nebraska Wesleyan’s Cole McCallum put the Prairie Wolves on the scoreboard first, just 8:25 into the contest. Alex Precella assisted on the scoring play for NWU.  Sophomore Paul Keane (Rochester, Minn./Mayo) tied the game a minute later off a feed from senior John Krebsbach (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral). Junior Tyler Kodet (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) scored the go-ahead tally with seven seconds remaining in the first half. Junior Brian Horst (Stillwater, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for the Johnnies.  

SJU senior goalkeeper Matt Sundberg (Wayzata, Minn.) made two saves in the first 45 minutes of action, while sophomore Sean Hasselstrom (Edina, Minn.) collected nine saves to preserve the Johnnies’ second-half lead. Goalkeeper Josh Miller made six saves for NWU.

The Johnnies (1-0-1, 0-0 MIAC) will travel to face Central, Iowa, on Thursday, Sept. 6. The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Pella, Iowa.
