COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University junior
Joey Stock (Cold Spring, Minn./Saint John's Prep) made his Northwoods League debut with the St. Cloud Rox on Tuesday, July 17.
Stock surrendered a single and showcased his low-90's fastball with three strikeouts in a scoreless ninth inning of relief in Tuesday's 6-2 loss to the Rochester Honkers. He signed with the Rox, the defending Northwoods League champions, July 13.
Three of Stock's teammates signed with the Northwoods League's Bismarck Larks in May: senior pitchers
Danny Kuhn (Alexandria, Minn.) and
Bennett Wiggins (St. Anthony, Minn.), and junior outfielder
Wyatt Ulrich (Indus, Minn./International Falls). Kuhn and Ulrich are still with the Larks, who clinched a postseason berth by claiming the title of 'First-Half Champions' of the league's North Division July 3.
The Northwoods League is a 20-team, collegiate summer baseball league for collegiate student-athletes. All players in the league must have NCAA eligibility remaining in order to participate. Players are not paid, so as to maintain their college eligibility.
Stock made six appearances, with five starts, and went 1-0 with a 3.16 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 25.2 innings pitched for the Johnnies in 2018. He made his collegiate debut at the plate, after serving exclusively as a pitcher in 2017, and batted .310 (18-for-58) with four home runs, four doubles and 20 RBI in 18 games (16 starts as SJU's designated hitter). Stock went 3-for-4 with a double, two homers and five RBI in his first start March 5, and clubbed two grand slams in the same game two days later.
SJU ended the 2018 season with a 33-8 record and won the MIAC regular-season championship, the program's 14th and first since 1998, with a 16-4 mark in conference play. The Johnnies made their ninth consecutive appearance in the MIAC Tournament May 11-13 and finished second with a 2-2 record. SJU set school records for wins (33), fielding percentage (.974), ERA (2.73) and WHIP (1.18) this spring.
