MOORHEAD, Minn. – No. 16 Saint John's basketball shot 13 percentage points below its season average but took advantage of its extra offensive possessions to earn a tough 72-55 win at Concordia on Wednesday, Jan. 3, in Moorhead.
NCAA Division III's top shooting team at 55.8 percent, SJU (9-1, 5-0 MIAC) shot an uncharacteristic 42.6 percent (23-for-54) from the field Wednesday night, but scored 15 points off 17 Concordia turnovers and totaled 14 second-chance points thanks to 11 offensive rebounds. The Johnnies entered the contest with only two wins in the previous 10 trips to CC's Memorial Auditorium.
Concordia (3-7, 1-4 MIAC) started the day eighth in Division III with a .517 field-goal percentage and took a six-point deficit (35-29) into halftime thanks to a three-pointer from Jordan Davis with two seconds left and a .542 shooting percentage (13-for-24). The Cobbers, however, shot only 30.8 percent (8-for-26) from the field, including a 1-for-9 showing from three-point range, in the second half.
Senior post
Tyler Weiss (Shakopee, Minn.) recorded his fourth double-double of the season and 14th of his career with 18 points and 11 rebounds. The 18 points enabled him to pass Luke Witt '02 and Kevin Buth '03 and move into 23rd in SJU history with 1,104 career points. He needs 17 points, his season average, to jump two more Johnnies and tie Matt Ohme '07 for 20th.
Senior guard
Patrick Strom (Fargo, N.D./Shanley) matched Weiss with a season-high 18 points on six three-pointers, which was one shy of his career high. He broke the school's all-time record for made three-pointers (181) the Johnnies' last time out Dec. 29.
SJU overcame a slow start, down 7-2, with a 17-2 run to make it 19-9 with 10:14 left in the first half. The Johnnies shot only 39.3 percent (11-for-28) in the first half. The visitors broke open a seven-point lead with an 18-7 run, thanks to seven field goals in 10 attempts, to go up 18 (61-43) with 5:47 remaining.
Kevin Wolfe led the Cobbers with 17 points and five rebounds.
The Johnnies return home to host Saint Mary's (1-9, 0-5 MIAC) for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday, Jan. 6, in Sexton Arena.
