COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Three Saint John's University baseball student-athletes earned Academic All-MIAC honors on Tuesday, June 21: senior shortstop Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.); junior third baseman Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview); and senior first baseman/pitcher Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview).

Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale to qualify for Academic All-MIAC recognition. Athletically, baseball student-athletes must compete in 50 percent of their team's varsity, regular-season contests. Pitchers must make at least five appearances or accumulate 20 innings pitched.

For the second time in the last three years, SJU led the conference with 63 male Academic All-MIAC honorees in 2015-16, six ahead of second-place St. Thomas (57). The Johnnies finished second in 2014-15, one honoree behind UST, and led the league with 57 in 2013-14.

A two-time Academic All-American and a three-time Academic All-MIAC honoree, Hershey graduated May 8 with a 3.91 GPA in accounting. He batted .372 and tied the SJU single-season record for hits (70), set by Aaron Pfaff '15 last season, and led the team with 25 multi-hit games en route to his second consecutive All-Region and All-MIAC honor this spring. Hershey became the 26th Johnnie to reach 100 career hits in his first at-bat of the 2016 season.

A career .354 hitter, Hershey started each of SJU's last 119 games at shortstop and finished third in school history in both hits (169) and at-bats (477), tied for fourth in games played (132), fifth in RBI (95) and sixth in runs scored (97). Hershey was named to the 11-man NCAA Midwest Regional All-Tournament team after batting .407 (11-for-27) with four runs scored, two home runs and six RBI in the tourney's six games.

An All-Region and All-MIAC honoree this spring, Strey started all 46 games and led the Johnnies in batting average (.387), extra-base hits (29), multi-RBI games (13), total RBI (48) and slugging percentage (.624). He finished second in runs scored (41) and third in hits (67), and graduated in May with a 3.55 GPA in social science (secondary education).

His 48 RBI and 108 total bases were both the second-most in school history, and his 22 doubles set a new SJU single-season record. Strey only struck out 10 times in 173 at-bats this season and batted .443 (47-for-106) with runners on base, .396 (21-for-53) with two outs and .391 (27-for-69) with runners in scoring position. He posted a .429 average with 30 hits, a .529 on-base percentage and 24 RBI in 20 conference games en route to All-MIAC honors. On the mound, Strey tallied a 4-5 record with a 4.56 ERA and 45 strikeouts (to 10 walks) in 53.1 innings pitched.

An All-Region and All-MIAC honoree for the second consecutive season, Schiebel is a mathematics major with a 3.63 GPA. He started all but one game in 2016 and finished second on the team in hits (68), extra-base hits (16) and RBI (39). Schiebel set a new SJU single-season records for at-bats (193) and triples (7), and became the 27th Johnnie to reach 100 career hits April 16. A career .361 hitter, Schiebel is already ninth in school history with 132 career hits and is second in school history with nine career triples, two behind the record held by Matt Boys '11.

The Johnnies ended the 2016 season ranked as high as No. 21 nationally by D3baseball.com and set a school record for wins with a 32-14 record (13-7 MIAC), including a 4-2 mark to finish runner-up at the NCAA Midwest Regional May 18-21 in La Crosse, Wis. SJU hosted the 2016 MIAC Tournament and posted a 3-0 record to earn its second consecutive MIAC Playoff Championship, and third in the last five seasons, May 12-14.
