CSCAA Release

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – The Saint John's University swimming and diving team received College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar All-America honors for the second consecutive season on Wednesday, June 15.

To be selected as a CSCAA Scholar All-America Team, programs must have achieved a grade point average of 3.00 or higher over the spring semester. SJU was one of 388 colleges, across all divisions, to earn the recognition in 2016.

Twenty-seven Johnnies combined for a 3.25 GPA this spring.

Junior Kenny Bergman (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission South) defended his conference championship in the 100-yard freestyle and the rest of the SJU swimming and diving team finished second out of eight teams at the 2016 MIAC Championships. An At-Large Academic All-District honoree in 2016, senior Paul Knaak (Forest Lake, Minn./Stillwater Area) earned a pair of All-MIAC (top three individually) honors by taking second in the 100- and third in the 50-yard freestyles. Junior Jose Alvarez (North Bay Village, Fla./Belen Jesuit) claimed third in the 200-yard individual medley and classmate Justin Wollin (Eagan, Minn.) placed third in the 1-meter dive.

SJU's Bill Saxton was named the MIAC Men's Swimming Coach of the Year for the second time in his career (2003).
