Game 2 Box ScoreCOLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's baseball opened its conference schedule with a doubleheader split with Hamline on Sunday, April 3, in Collegeville.
The Johnnies (13-6, 1-1 MIAC) won game one, 5-2, but committed three errors en route to two unearned runs in a 3-2 loss in game two.
SJU held Hamline (9-7, 1-1 MIAC), which entered the game batting .364 and averaging 10.8 runs per contest, to five runs and a .197 average in 16 innings Sunday.
Senior first baseman/pitcher
Patrick Strey (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) helped himself with a 2-for-2 showing at the plate and three RBI, including a two-out, two-run single in the first inning of game one. He improved to 3-1 on the year in the complete-game effort, allowing the two runs on seven hits. He struck out seven and walked one.
Freshman outfielder
Max Jackson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) went 2-for-4 at the leadoff spot, including an RBI single in the fourth inning. He went 4-for-9 on the day with two stolen bases.
SJU tagged the Pipers' Alex Bauermeister, who allowed all five runs on eight hits, with the loss. He started the game with a 1.42 ERA and a .141 opponent batting average in three previous starts (19 innings) this spring.
HU totaled only five hits and went 0-for-14 with runners on base, including 0-for-9 with runners in scoring position, in game two but still won. The Pipers turned three double plays in the game, including one with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning.
Collin Olstad gave HU a 1-0 lead with a leadoff homer in the sixth and added an unearned run on a sacrifice fly later in the inning.
Senior shortstop
Logan Hershey (Maple Grove, Minn.) cut the Johnnies' deficit in half with an RBI groundout in the bottom half of the inning.
The Pipers tacked on another unearned run in the seventh inning, but Hershey answered with another RBI on his fourth hit of the day in the eighth.
The reigning MIAC Pitcher of the Week, junior
Alex Kendall (St. Cloud, Minn./Saint John's Prep) was saddled with the tough-luck loss. He allowed the three runs (one earned) on four hits in seven innings. He struck out five and did not walk a batter. Sophomore
Nick Noack (Thousand Oaks, Calif./Westlake) pitched two innings of one-hit relief.
Junior third baseman
Derek Schiebel (Apple Valley, Minn./Eastview) led the SJU cause with a 3-for-4 performance at the plate in game two. His lone out, a warning-track flyball into the wind in the third inning, was nearly his fourth home run of the season.
Strey reached base in six of his seven plate appearances and went 2-for-3 on the day (with three walks and one hit-by-pitch).
The Johnnies travel to face Carleton (5-14, 2-0 MIAC) for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday, April 6, in Northfield.
