Day 1 ResultsNORTHFIELD, Minn. – Saint John's track and field won two events and earned seven All-MIAC honors at the first day of the 2016 MIAC Indoor Championships on Friday, March 4, at Carleton.
The second and final day of competition is scheduled to begin at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, March 5, in Northfield.
St. Thomas leads the 11-team field with 102 points, followed by St. Olaf (54), SJU (48) and Carleton (47).
The Johnnies' total is impressive, considering they did not have a participant in the heptathlon or 5,000 meters, and had one runner in both the 400 and 800 meters.
Freshman
Max Martin (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) won the MIAC title in the 55-meter hurdles, SJU's first in the event since Jed Kassulke '02 in 2000, with a personal-record time of 7.98 seconds. Sophomore
Mitchell Peck (Alexandria, Minn.) finished fifth (8.17). The last Johnnie to earn All-MIAC honors (top three individually, champion relay) in the 55-meter hurdles was Matt Mogensen '07 in 2005.
The Johnnies' distance medley relay (
Lukas Buehler,
Max Martin,
Thomas Feichtinger,
Ryan Bugler) won the team's other conference title with a time of 10:30.82. The finish was SJU's first in the top three, let alone title, in the event. Buehler led the team with a strong 1,200 meters until some jostling between him and another team resulted in the baton being knocked out of his hand. He quickly picked up the baton, but had fallen to eighth place before he handed it off to Martin for the 400-meter leg. Martin closed a little of the 100-meter gap and handed the baton to Feichtinger for the 800 meters. Feichtinger kicked it in gear for the first two laps to move up to fourth place and caught up to the lead pack before he handed it off to Bugler for the final 1,600 meters. Bugler moved into second place and stayed in that position until 600 meters remained, where he made a decisive move with three laps left and held on for the win.
Junior
Ryan Kuester (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) became the first Johnnie to earn All-MIAC honors in the 55-meter dash since 2005 (Lee Clintsman '05) with a second-place finish (6.54). Freshman
Drew Schoenbauer (New Prague, Minn.) followed in fifth (6.61), 0.05 from All-MIAC honors.
Senior
Thomas Feichtinger (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) earned his first All-MIAC honor of the night (13th of his career) with a third-place finish in the mile run (4:16.45). The last Johnnie to achieve All-MIAC distinction in the event was Chris Erichsen '08 in 2007.
Junior
Peyton Thiry (Lester Prairie, Minn./Lester Prairie-Holy Trinity) took fifth with a personal-record toss of 16.37 meters in the weight throw.
Junior
Maxwell Olson (Warrensburg, Mo.) finished seventh in the pole vault (4.45 meters), while senior
Matt Devery (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) and sophomore
Jordan Theisen (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Apollo) tied for ninth (4.15 meters).
