Johnnies Suffer 6-3 Tennis Setback at St. Thomas

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's tennis returned to conference play with a 6-3 loss at St. Thomas on Saturday, Feb. 27, at the Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

The Johnnies (2-4, 2-2 MIAC) claimed one of the three doubles matches, which were all decided by an 8-5 score, at No. 3 by freshmen Ryan Meger (Stillwater, Minn./Mahtomedi) and Jonah Punnoose (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson). The duo is 3-3 (2-2 MIAC) so far this spring.

Sophomore Tim Larson (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and senior Andrew Nagel (Maple Grove, Minn.) won back-to-back matches at Nos. 2 (6-1, 6-3) and 3 (6-2, 6-4), respectively, but the Tommies (1-2, 1-1 MIAC) won the other four in straight sets. Larson is now 4-2 (3-1 MIAC) on the year, while Nagel is 2-4 (2-2 MIAC).

The Johnnies return to action with two matches in Winona Friday-Saturday, March 11-12. SJU takes on Saint Mary's at 7 p.m. that Friday before ending the trip with an 11 a.m. non-conference match against Luther (Iowa) on Saturday.
