ResultsRIVER FALLS, Wis. – Saint John's track and field opened its 2016 season with nine, top-eight finishes at the Wisconsin-River Falls Winter Classic on Saturday, Jan. 30.
The Johnnies finished sixth out of the eight teams, though they did not have a participant in six of the 17 events (1,000 meters; 3,000 meters; high jump; pole vault; 4x200-meter relay; and the 4x400-meter relay).
Junior
Raymond Twumasi (Coon Rapids, Minn.) led the collegiate participants in the triple jump with a leap of 13.29 meters. Junior
Zach Roy (Andover, Minn.) followed in fifth (12.56 meters).
Junior
Zach Grieves (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) and freshman
Max Martin (Minneapolis, Minn./Wayzata) cross the finish line in third (52.58) and fourth (52.86), respectively, in the 400 meters, and senior
Nick Zurn (Belle Plaine, Minn.) followed in sixth (53.66). Martin also took fifth in the 55-meter hurdles (8.40).
Freshman
Drew Schoenbauer (New Prague, Minn.) finished fourth in the 200 meters (23.30) and junior
Will Zimmerman (Owatonna, Minn.) placed fifth in the 800 meters (2:03.50).
Junior
Peyton Thiry (Lester Prairie, Minn./Lester Prairie-Holy Trinity), an All-American defensive lineman for the Johnnie football team, led SJU in both throwing events Saturday. He claimed sixth with a personal best in the weight throw (14.94 meters) and finished ninth in the shot put (13.50 meters).
The Johnnies return to action at the Macalester Invitational on Friday, Feb. 5. The meet is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in St. Paul.
