COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University senior wide receiver
Josh Bungum (Paynesville, Minn.) and senior cornerback
Trevor Warner (Murrieta, Calif./Vista Murrieta) played in the All American Bowl on Jan. 16 at Municipal Stadium in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The All American Eagles defeated the Flagler Knights, an amateur football team, 9-0 to claim All American Bowl XXI. The All American Bowl is the longest-running, college all-star game for small-college football players.
Bungum was named the offensive most valuable player for the All American Eagles after catching three passes for 55 yards. He also returned two punts for a total of 44 yards.
On the other side of the ball, Warner recorded a tackle and a pass breakup in the win, and allowed one completion in five passes thrown in his direction.
Bungum was named D3football.com All-American honorable mention in 2015 as a returner, where he was a two-time All-MIAC first-team selection. He averaged 17 yards per punt return (15 for 255 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown) and 32.0 yards per kick return (12 for 384 yards, including a 96-yard touchdown) this fall, and became the first Johnnie to have a kick and punt return for a touchdown in the same season since 1958.
A three-time All-MIAC second-team selection as a receiver, Bungum led the team in all three receiving categories: receptions (58), yards (891) and touchdowns (10). He finished third in the MIAC with 632 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns in conference play, and ended his career second in school history in receptions (213) and fourth in receiving yards (2,676). Bungum is the first Johnnie to lead the team in both catches and receiving yards all four seasons since Dave Arnold (1969-72).
Warner was named to the 2015 D3football.com All-West Region third team after appearing in 10 games (all starts) this fall and led the MIAC with four interceptions. He posted 33 tackles (27 solo), including three for a loss, two sacks, a blocked field goal and a team-leading eight pass breakups. Warner ended his career with 13 interceptions, one away from the school's top five.
SJU ended the 2015 season ranked No. 10 nationally and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III playoffs for the second consecutive year, finishing with a 10-2 overall record (7-1 MIAC). The Johnnies are expected to return 13 of their 24 starters (five on offense, six on defense and both special-teams specialists) next fall.
