SJU Sits in Seventh Following First Day of MIAC Outdoor Meet

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Saint John's track and field begins the final day of the MIAC Outdoor Championships in seventh place out of 11 teams following day one of competition on Friday, May 8, on the campus of Macalester in St. Paul.

Hamline leads the men's field with a total of 55.5 points, followed closely by Concordia-Moorhead (54). SJU has 19 points, five behind Gustavus Adolphus in sixth.

Junior Matt Devery (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) earned All-MIAC honors (top three individually, champion relay) in the pole vault, the Johnnies' first in the event since Brayden Wagner '09 and Andrew Norman '11 went 1-2 in 2009, with a third-place finish (4.48 meters). Sophomore Maxwell Olson (Warrensburg, Mo.) followed in a tie for fifth (4.33 meters).

Sophomore Peyton Thiry (Lester Prairie, Minn./Lester Prairie-Holy Trinity) gave SJU its first points of the meet with a fifth-place finish in the hammer throw (47.37 meters) and later placed seventh in the discus (43.88 meters).

Junior Thomas Feichtinger (Omaha, Neb./Mount Michael Benedictine) qualified for Saturday's final in the 800 meters with a second-place finish (1:56.17), while senior Kyle Rossow (St. Louis Park, Minn./Hopkins) also qualified in seventh (1:55.75).

Freshman Mitchell Peck (Alexandria, Minn.) advanced to Saturday's final in the 400-meter hurdles with a fourth-place finish (56.64) in the prelims.

Senior Jake Lammi (Marine on St. Croix, Minn./Stillwater Area) and sophomore Zach Grieves (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) advanced to the finals in the 400 meters, as the two claimed seventh (50.11) and eighth (50.23), respectively.

Senior Yasin Williams (East Orange, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) qualified for the 100-meter dash finals with a time of 11.37 seconds, which was good for eighth in Friday's prelims. Sophomore Ryan Kuester (Glencoe, Minn./Glencoe-Silver Lake) just missed qualifying with a time of 11.39 to take 10th.

Williams also qualified for the 200-meter dash finals with a time of 22.51 seconds, which was good for fifth.

The Johnnies' 4x100-meter relay team (Jordan Tradewell, Williams, Aaron Piecukonis, Kuester) won the first heat with a time of 42.88 seconds to post the third-best time in the prelims.

The 4x800-meter relay (Chris Mergens, Will Zimmerman, Matthew Burgstahler, Ryan Bugler) finished fifth (7:54.42).

Saturday's competition is scheduled to begin with field events at 2 p.m., followed by action on the track at 3 p.m.
