ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Saint John's track and field team opened its 2014 season with 24 top-five finishes, including four wins, at Bethel's Gene Glader Classic on Saturday, Feb. 8, in Arden Hills.
In addition to the Johnnies and host Royals, the men's side included student-athletes from Augsburg, Macalester, Division I Minnesota and Northwestern (Minn.). SJU totaled 45 participants in 15 of the 18 events. The meet was not scored.
Junior
Yasin Williams (East Orange, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) won the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.09 and senior
Patrick Means (Minneapolis, Minn./DeLaSalle) finished fifth (23.70).
Junior
Jordan Tradewell (Cedar, Minn./St. Francis) crossed the finish line first in the 400 meters (51.53) and sophomore
Nick Zurn (Belle Plaine, Minn.) followed in fourth (52.57).
Freshman
Travis Spillum (Little Falls, Minn.) tied for first in the high jump with a height of 1.77 meters. Junior
Nick Thies (Green Isle, Minn./Sibley East) and freshman
Thomas Widmer (New Prague, Minn.) took third and fourth at 1.67 meters. Thies also took third in the 60-meter hurdles (8.68) and Spillum finished fifth in the long jump (6.15 meters), 0.02 behind freshman
Joe Koll (Winona, Minn./Cotter) in fourth. Sophomore
Anthony Smith (Newark, N.J./St. Benedict's Prep) placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.23).
Freshman
Raymond Twumasi (Coon Rapids, Minn.) won the triple jump with a leap of 12.84 meters, 0.37 ahead of Koll in second.
Junior
Chris Mergens (Farmington, Minn./Rosemount) took second in the 600 meters (1:25.20), followed by senior
Taylor Nauman (Blaine, Minn./Totino-Grace) and freshman
Shane Ringkob (Eagan, Minn./Rosemount) in fourth (1:27.49) and fifth (1:28.51), respectively.
Junior
Kyle Rossow (St. Louis Park, Minn./Hopkins) and senior
James McLean (Nisswa, Minn./Brainerd) claimed second (2:37.72) and fourth (2:38.37), respectively, in the 1,000 meters, while freshman
Maxwell Olson (Warrensburg, Mo.) and sophomore
Matt Devery (Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy) went 4-5 in the pole vault.
Freshman
Tony Yost (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led five Johnnies in the shot put with a toss of 13.79 meters, which was good for third. Senior
Rob Sybrant (Shakopee, Minn.) followed closely in fourth (13.29 meters), while classmate
Brian Vargason (Owatonna, Minn.) took fifth in both the shot put (12.99 meters) and weight throw (14.97 meters).
The Johnnies return home to host their alumni and Macalester for an 11:30 a.m. meet next Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Donald McNeely Spectrum in Collegeville.
