Harmon (0:24)
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University sophomore midfielder
Rocky Harmon (Hudson, Wis.) scored both goals in the Johnnies' 2-0 win over Macalester in the MIAC Playoff quarterfinals on Tuesday, Nov. 4, at Haws Field in Collegeville.
The fourth-seeded Johnnies (12-6, 7-3 MIAC) advance to face top-seeded St. Olaf (12-4-2, 7-1-2 MIAC) for a 2 p.m. semifinal match on Wednesday, Nov. 5, in Northfield.
The win was SJU's sixth in a row and fifth consecutive shutout. The postseason victory at home is the Johnnies' first since Nov. 7, 1986 (a 1-0 victory over Wisconsin-Whitewater in the first round of the NCAA Division III playoffs; the MIAC Playoffs were established in 2003).
Harmon put the home team ahead early with his third goal of the season in the 12th minute. Senior
David Wee (Savage, Minn./Prior Lake) started the play with a long kick toward the net. Harmon, a Macalester defender and the goalkeeper all reached the ball at the same time. As the defender attempted to box him out from the ball, Harmon snuck his right foot around and sent a shot just inside the far post.
Harmon padded the Johnnies' lead 13:06 into the second half. Junior goalkeeper
Kevin Lebahn (New Hope, Minn./Benilde-St. Margaret's) dropped a deep kick with wind to junior co-captain
Alex Niederloh (Maple Grove, Minn.), who sent a header over a handful of players to the front of Harmon. Harmon turned and unleashed a shot to the far, top corner of the net.
Lebahn made one save to improve to 11-6 and earn his fifth shutout of the season. He has allowed five goals in his last 10 matches, accumulating 885:59 consecutive scoreless minutes in goal.
SJU out-shot the Scots (11-6-2, 6-3-1 MIAC) 11-8, including an 8-3 margin in the second half, and 6-1 on goal.
St. Olaf defeated the Johnnies 2-1 on Sept. 20. The Oles scored two goals in the first 22 minutes of the match and registered a slim edge in shots, 9-8 (6-5 on goal).
