Lead Slips Away Late, SJU Settles for Tie

VADNAIS HEIGHTS, Minn. – Saint John's settled for a 1-1 tie at Hamline on Friday, Jan. 25, in Vadnais Heights.

Following a scoreless first period, junior Trent Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) gave SJU (8-6-4, 3-3-3 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal, his third tally of the season, 6:06 into the second period. Senior Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) and sophomore Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) assisted on the goal, which was scored one second after a 5-on-3 power play expired.

With the goaltender pulled, Tyler Johnson tied the game at 1-1 for Hamline (1-14-5, 1-7-3 MIAC) with a shot off the post that rattled in with 56 seconds remaining.

Freshman Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.), the reigning MIAC Men's Hockey Athlete of the Week, made 27 saves in the tie.

The Johnnies out-shot the Pipers 30-28 in the game, though HU held a 23-18 advantage after the first period. The visitors killed off all four Hamline power plays but were just 1-for-7 on the man advantage. 

SJU returns home to host the Pipers for a 7 p.m. game Saturday, Jan. 26, at the National Hockey and Events Center in St. Cloud.
