Saint John's ends its regular-season schedule with today's Wisconsin-La Crosse “Last Chance” Qualifier, which is scheduled for 4 p.m. in La Crosse, Wis.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's registered five All-MIAC performances (top three) and finished fourth out of 11 teams at the 2012 MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships held last weekend (May 11-12) in Moorhead. St. Thomas won the title with a total of 187 points, followed by Hamline (153), Gustavus Adolphus (118) and SJU (101).
Senior Wade Powers (Hawick, Minn./New London-Spicer) won his second MIAC Outdoor title in the discus (2010) with a throw of 46.82 meters on Saturday. A Johnnie has now won the event at the outdoor meet each of the past four years.
Freshman Ben Kuhr (Burnsville, Minn./Lakeville South) missed All-MIAC honors by just 0.02 meters to claim fourth (44.58 meters) in the discus, while sophomore Brian Vargason (Owatonna, Minn.) finished close behind in fifth (44.57 meters). Powers also finished fourth in the hammer throw (50.40 meters) on Saturday and missed All-MIAC honors with a fourth-place finish in the shot put (14.64 meters) on Friday. Kuhr finished close behind in fifth (14.38 meters).
Junior Kevin Horton (Eagan, Minn.) finished second (48.81) in the 400 meters, missing the MIAC title by only 0.05 seconds, and earned his second All-MIAC honor of the day with a third-place finish (22.29) in the 200 meters.
Junior Andrew Calascione (Parker, Colo./Chaparal) earned All-MIAC honors with a third-place finish in the javelin with a throw of 48.67 meters.
Senior Logan Schwinghammer (Sartell, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) just missed All-MIAC honors in the 400-meter hurdles, placing fourth (55.21) 0.13 seconds behind third place. He also took eighth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.74).
Freshman Chase Myhran (Orono, Minn.) finished second (6.95 meters), missing the conference title by 0.02 meters, in the long jump to earn All-MIAC honors (top three). Senior Rob Floren (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo) tied with St. Thomas' Eyo Ekpo for third with a leap of 6.82 meters, but Ekpo claimed All-MIAC honors with the true third-place finish because of a better second jump (6.73 vs. 6.46 meters for Floren).
Senior Andrew Clasen (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) claimed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 9:31.04, while junior Ruairi Moynihan (Fargo, N.D./South) finished sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:23.07).
Sophomore John Subialka (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) and junior Matt Scherber (Royalton, Minn./Sartell-St. Stephen) claimed sixth (32:41.08) and ninth (23:50.34) in the 10,000 meters, respectively.
Juniors Brady O'Brien (Minneapolis, Minn./Holy Angels) and Brian Peterson (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) finished seventh (13.29 meters) and eighth (13.28 meters) in the triple jump, respectively. Both marks were season-bests.
The Johnnies' 4x100-meter relay (Jack Elsnes, Kevin Horton, Travis Sargent, Chris Phillips) took fourth with a time of 42.78, 0.73 behind champion Gustavus, while the 4x400 squad claimed third (3:18.72).
LAST YEAR'S MEET: Tom Hoffman '11 broke a 31-year old school record and earned an automatic trip to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships with a time of 1:50.16 in the 800 meters at last year's meet. Hoffman improved his season-best time by 0:01.51 to break the school record set by Chuck Moorse at the 1980 NCAA Championships (1:51.04).
Clasen finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a season-best time of 9:36.09, though the NCAA provisional time is 9:24.00. Senior Dustin Franta (La Crescent, Minn.) took fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:57.91. Griffin Hayes '11 and Powers claimed sixth (46.63 meters) and eighth (45.32 meters), respectively, in the discus. Tim Juba '11 took sixth with a provisional distance of 55.40 meters in the hammer throw.
