COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – A trio of Saint John's University golfers earned Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) honors at its awards banquet Tuesday, May 15, in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. Junior Dennis Granath (Bandhagen, Sweden/Farsta Gymnasium) and sophomore Casey Vangsness (Alexandria, Minn.) were named to the All-Region team, while Granath and senior Alex Klehr (Mankato, Minn./West), a pair of management majors, were named Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars.

The Johnnies have now had at least one All-America Scholar and an All-Region selection in each of the past 13 seasons (a total of 25 All-America Scholars and 33 All-Region selections since the 1999-00 season).

The 2011-12 MIAC Player of the Year and a 2011 PING All-America first-team selection, Granath led the MIAC with a 74.5 stroke average in 21 rounds in 2011-12. He tallied seven top-10 finishes, of which five were in the top five. Granath earned All-MIAC honors (top 10, including ties) for the second consecutive season by tying for seventh at the 2011 MIAC Championship last fall. Granath enters his senior season in September with a 74.4 scoring average in 61 career rounds.

The 2010-11 GCAA Central Region and MIAC Freshman of the Year, Vangsness finished second on the team with a 75.0 stroke average in 21 rounds. He tied Granath with six top-10 finishes and earned SJU's lone medalist performance of the season, a four-under par 68 against St. Cloud State on April 2. Vangsness enters his junior season this fall with a 74.9 scoring average in 44 career rounds.

Klehr tallied a career-best 76.0 scoring average in 21 rounds this season. He led SJU at the Johnnies' first event of the season, the Augsburg Invitational (third, even-par 144), and its last, the SJU Spring Invitational (tied-seventh, even-par 142).

To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status, an individual must be a junior or senior academically and compete in at least two full years at the collegiate level; participate in 70-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships; have a stroke average under 79.0 in Division III; and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.

Saint John's did not receive an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III Championship, ending a 12-year run. The Johnnies finished no lower than eighth with two national titles in each of the past five seasons, including a third-place finish last year. SJU led the MIAC with a 298.6 stroke average in 21 rounds in 2011-12. The Johnnies fell four spots from No. 12 in the latest national poll released May 16, though the Johnnies edged at-large entrants Huntingdon (Ala., No. 17), Christopher Newport (Va., No. 18) and Gustavus Adolphus (No. 19).
