SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA – Saint John's ended the competitive portion of its Spring Break trip with a pair of losses to nationally-ranked teams on Sunday, March 4. Sixth-ranked Kenyon (Ohio) swept the Johnnies 9-0 in an early-morning match, followed by a 7-2 loss to No. 30 Occidental (Calif.) later in the afternoon.
Junior Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy) was the lone Johnnie to win a set against Kenyon, which he did in the second at No. 1 singles before retiring due to cramping (0-6, 6-4, 1-2). He won at No. 1 singles in the Occidental match (6-1, 6-3) and teamed up with senior Ian Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) to win at No. 1 doubles [9-8 (7-4)]. Hansen's match winning streak ended at eight with a pair of losses Sunday.
The Johnnies (2-8, 0-3 MIAC) return to conference play at Saint Mary's on Saturday, March 17, in Winona.
