SARTELL, Minn. – Saint John's opened its 2012 tennis season with a pair of losses to non-NCAA Division III schools on Saturday, Feb. 4, at Gold's Gym in Sartell. The Johnnies started the day with a tough 5-4 loss to Division I South Dakota State before falling 7-2 to Division II St. Cloud State in the nightcap.

Ian Hansen (Dawson, Minn./Dawson-Boyd) started his senior campaign with a pair of wins at No. 1 singles for SJU, including a straight-set victory (6-2, 6-2) against the Jackrabbits. SJU claimed two of the three doubles matches in the narrow loss to SDSU. Sophomores Joe Laue (St. Louis Park, Minn./Holy Angels) and Connor Rust (Rochester, Minn./Lourdes) won a 9-8 decision at No. 2, thanks to a 7-4 victory in the breaker, while junior Willie Paul (Duluth, Minn./Marshall) and freshman Anh Doan (Spring Lake Park, Minn.) earned an 8-2 win at No. 3. Doan tallied his first collegiate victory in singles competition at No. 6 (6-0, 6-2).

Hansen won his second match of the day via the super-breaker over St. Cloud State's Joao Orsi (6-3, 4-6, 10-4). Laue followed his tough loss in the super-breaker against SDSU with a shortened 8-6 win versus the Huskies.

The Johnnies played without its regular starter at No. 1 singles, junior Fabricio Moncada (Managua, Nicaragua/Lincoln International Academy), who is ranked fourth in the Central region and No. 21 nationally in the ITA Preseason Rankings.

SJU begins conference play at home against Gustavus Adolphus next Saturday, Feb. 11. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Gold's Gym.
