BLAINE, Minn. – Saint John's erupted for five goals in the second period, including a natural hat trick by sophomore John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.), as the Johnnies rolled to an 8-1 non-conference win over Saint Mary's on Sunday, Oct. 28, at the MIAC Showcase in Blaine.
Sophomore Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) gave SJU (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with his fifth career goal, on the power play, at the 16:12 mark of the opening period. Haeg and junior Josh Gross (Maple Grove, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play.
Senior Joe Harren (Warroad, Minn.) made it 2-0 with a power-play goal of his own 3:37 into the second period. Assists were credited to senior Jascha Pettit (Wadena, Minn.) and senior co-captain Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.), who added to the lead 2:49 later, eight seconds after another SJU power play expired. Harren and Pettit tallied the assists. The goal was Palmiscno's 50th career point.
Haeg followed with three consecutive even-strength goals over a span of 11:58 in the second period. He lit the lamp 1:03 after Palmiscno's tally and added his second (14:19) and third (18:27) goals. Sophomore Wally Cossette (Maple Grove, Minn.) assisted on the first goal and freshman Shane Wolden (Maple Grove, Minn.) and junior Axel Ramsgard (Gothenburg, Sweden) assisted on the second. Ramsgard and sophomore Nick Senta (Savage, Minn.) assisted on the third tally. The hat trick is the first by a Johnnie since Karl Gilbert's three goals in the 4-0 win over Saint Mary's on Oct. 31, 2009, in Bloomington.
Senior co-captain Tobias Linbro (Nykvarn, Sweden) increased the Johnnies' lead to 7-0 with a breakaway goal 9:54 into the third period.
Senta scored his first collegiate goal, on the power play, at the 12:19 mark. Haeg earned his second assist and fifth point of the game, while Gross had the other assist.
SMU (1-1-0, 0-0-0 MIAC) erased the shutout with a power-play goal from Bobby Thompson with 2:44 left in the game.
Freshman Saxton Soley (Elk Mound, Wis.) made 18 saves to earn the win in his first collegiate start for SJU.
The Johnnies answered Friday's 0-for-4 showing on the power play by converting three of their four opportunities Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals, meanwhile, were only 1-for-9 on the day, including a combined 2:06 with a five-on-three advantage.
The last time SJU scored five goals or more in a single period occurred Feb. 21, 2009. SJU scored five goals in the second period of an 8-2 win over Saint Mary's in St. Cloud. The 8-1 win is the largest margin of victory since Nov. 19, 2005 (a 7-0 win over Concordia-Moorhead in St. Cloud).
The Johnnies return home to host Wisconsin-Stout (0-2-1, 0-0-0 NCHA) this Friday, Nov. 2, at the Municipal Athletic Complex (MAC) in St. Cloud. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
