ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's broke through a 1-1 tie with three goals in the final 6:32 of the game to defeat Hamline 4-1 on Thursday, Jan. 26, in St. Cloud.
The Johnnies (7-9-2, 5-4-0 MIAC) outshot Hamline 39-15 in the game, including a 30-9 margin in the first two periods. The win, the Johnnies' fourth in a row, puts SJU in a four-way tie for second place in the MIAC standings.
Hamline (7-11-2, 4-6-1 MIAC) found the scoreboard first, on its first shot of the game, with a goal from Tyler Johnson.
Junior Jascha Pettit (Wadena, Minn.) tied the game with a power-play goal, his team-leading eighth of the season, 3:08 later. Junior Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) and sophomore Trent Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) collected the assists. SJU held an 18-3 edge in shots at the first intermission.
Following a scoreless second period, freshman Phil Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) tallied what proved to be the game-winner at the 13:28 mark of the third. Sophomores Jason Johnson (Duluth, Minn.) and Axel Ramsgard (Gothenburg, Sweden) earned the assists.
Down by a goal and on the power play, Hamline pulled its goaltender to gain a two-man advantage with 3:01 left. The move backfired, however, as Rooney hit the empty-netter to put the game away for good. The goal, which was assisted by Phil Johnson and senior goaltender Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.), was the first shorthanded tally of the season for SJU.
Freshman Dave Mylrea (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) ended the scoring with his first collegiate goal with four seconds left. Palmiscno and freshman Nick Vatnsdal (Independence, Minn.) recorded the assists.
Civello made 12 saves in two periods of scoreless relief after junior J.D. Wells (Anoka, Minn.) did not return due to illness. The cold/flu bug kept freshmen John Haeg (Lakeville, Minn.), the team's leading scorer with 19 points (4g/15a), and Nick Senta (Savage, Minn.) out of Friday's lineup.
SJU ended the contest 2-for-6 on the man advantage and successfully killed off all five of the Pipers' power plays.
The Johnnies conclude the series with a 7 p.m. game against the Pipers on Friday, Jan. 27, at the Vadnais Heights Sports Center.
