COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University sophomore midfielder Andrew Johnson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) scored two goals, 1:29 apart, and assisted on another as the host Johnnies defeated Cornell (Iowa) 4-1 on Sunday, Sept. 5. The victory was the first for head coach John Haws.
Senior midfielder Clash Lo (Maplewood, Minn./Tartan) put the Johnnies (1-1-1, 0-0-0 MIAC) ahead 1-0 with his first goal of the season 17:57 into the match. Johnson and sophomore defender Ryan Fuchs (St. Michael, Minn./Rogers) were credited with assists. The assist was Johnson's first career point.
Five minutes into the second half, senior midfielder J.C. Artavia (White Bear Lake, Minn.) tallied his first goal of the year with an assist from freshman midfielder Michael Coborn (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral).
Johnson then increased SJU’s lead to 3-0 with his first collegiate goal 17 minutes later, and added another 1:29 after that. Lo assisted on the first tally, Coborn, again, on the second. Freshman midfielder Calvin Koep (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) earned the second assists on both goals.
Cornell avoided the shutout with a goal from Zach Baker at the 71:38 mark.
Junior Mike Sikich (Apple Valley, Minn.) made four saves to record his first career win. Freshman Ryan Brutger (St. Cloud, Minn./Apollo) replaced Sikich following Baker’s goal and made one save.
SJU used 25 different players and out-shot the Rams (0-1-1, 0-0-0 IIAC) 41-12 in the contest (18-6 on-goal).
The win was the first for an SJU head soccer coach, other than Pat Haws, since Nov. 5, 1977 (3-1 over Augsburg in the NAIA District 13 Playoffs).
The Johnnies begin MIAC play Wednesday, Sept. 15, against Augsburg. The match is scheduled for 4 p.m. at George Durenberger Field in Collegeville.
