MIAC Release

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University senior quarterback Joe Boyle (Richfield, Minn./Holy Angels) and sophomore defensive back Alex Powell (Hopkins, Minn.) were named MIAC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively, Sept. 27.

Boyle passed for 339 yards, his first career 300-yard passing performance, on 23 of 30 passing and two touchdowns in last weekend's win at Augsburg. He also added 41 yards on seven carries (net of 29 yards due to two sacks) and two more touchdowns. Boyle completed a pass to nine different receivers on the afternoon to record SJU's first 300-yard passing game since Alex Kofoed threw for 321 yards and four touchdowns against St. Thomas on Oct. 27, 2007, a stretch of 24 games. The 24-game absence is the longest drought since the 53-game absence between the program's second 300-yard passing performance (Oct. 30, 1982; Dennis Schleper at Macalester, 328 yds.) and its next on Sept. 17, 1988 (John Lahti at Gustavus, 321 yds.).

Powell recorded his first career two-interception game in last Saturday's 48-10 win at Augsburg. Both of his interceptions occurred inside the Johnnies' 10-yard line, including one in the end zone. His performance was the first since senior linebacker Billy Lawrence's (Edina, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) pair of interceptions against Carleton last November, but the first for a Johnnie defensive back since Nov. 17, 2007 (John Cloeter vs. Redlands, Calif. in the NCAA Division III playoffs). Powell became the first SJU cornerback since Jason Pflipsen in 2002 (Oct. 26 at Concordia) to tally two interceptions in one game. The instance is also the last for any SJU player to record two picks in the same game on the road. Powell and Co. held Augsburg quarterback Marcus Brumm to 25 of 47 passing for 224 yards and combined to intercept him four times. He entered the game averaging 375 yards passing with 11 touchdowns and two interceptions on the young season.

SJU (3-1, 2-0 MIAC) plays host to nationally-ranked St. Thomas (4-0, 2-0 MIAC) for Homecoming this Saturday, Oct. 2. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Clemens Stadium in Collegeville.
