Four Johnnies Earn Academic All-MIAC Honors

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. - Four Saint John's University baseball student-athletes repeated as Academic All-MIAC honorees on Thursday, July 8: senior pitcher Andrew Aebly (Madison, Wis./Edgewood), junior outfielder Matt Boys (Eden Prairie, Minn./Minnetonka), senior second baseman Joe Eiden (Maple Grove, Minn./Totino-Grace) and junior pitcher Brett Kramer (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd).

Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior or senior academically with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale to qualify for Academic All-MIAC recognition. Athletically, baseball student-athletes must compete in 50 percent of their team’s varsity regular season contests. Pitchers must make 10 appearances or more.

Aebly posted a 4-4 record with a 6.30 ERA in 2010. He walked nine in 40 innings, including just three in 26 MIAC innings. A two-time honoree, Aebly is a chemistry major with a 3.57 GPA.

A three-time Academic All-MIAC honoree, Eiden batted .306 with 34 hits and 19 RBI in 2010 but did most of his damage in conference play. He posted a .359 batting average with 23 hits and 15 RBI in 20 MIAC games. Eiden is a political science major with a 3.59 GPA.

Boys tied for the team lead with five triples and led the Johnnies with nine stolen bases and five outfield assists this spring. He batted .231 with an on-base percentage of .340. A two-time honoree, Boys is management major with a 3.90 GPA.

Kramer posted a 6-4 record with a 4.42 ERA in 71.1 innings in 2010, including a 4-1 mark with a team-low 3.31 ERA in 32.2 conference innings. The 2009-10 honor is the second consecutive for the biology major (pre-physical therapy emphasis) with a 3.81 GPA.

Saint John’s tied for second in the MIAC with a 14-6 record and finished 21-18 overall in 2010. The Johnnies went 0-2 at the MIAC Tournament with losses to Concordia Moorhead (4-3) and No. 4 St. Thomas (5-0). Head coach Jerry Haugen ended his 33rd season with a 617-537-5 (.535) career record. He became the 19th active NCAA Division III coach to reach 600 wins and 31st all-time in Division III history against the Rochester Institute of Technology (N.Y.) on March 2, 2010, in Arizona. Since 1978, SJU has never had four returning All-MIAC players (three, three times), which Haugen will welcome back in 2011.
