LA CROSSE, Wis. – Three Johnnies either improved or recorded NCAA provisional marks at the “last-chance” qualifier held Thursday, May 20, at Wis.-La Crosse.
Junior Griffin Hayes (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) improved his NCAA provisional mark in the discus, set at the MIAC Outdoor Championships last weekend (47.26 meters), with a toss of 47.88 meters, good for third place. Sophomore Wade Powers (Hawick, Minn./New London-Spicer) finished fifth with a throw of 46.55 meters. Powers provisionally qualified with his MIAC-champion throw of 48.59 meters last weekend.
Hayes also recorded his season-best in the hammer throw with a distance of 51.63 meters, but fell shy of the NCAA provisional mark by 0.87 meter. He and junior Tim Juba (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) finished ninth and 10th (50.12 meters), respectively, in the event. Juba provisionally qualified with his throw of 54.31 meters on May 8.
Senior Patrick Lowder (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) finished third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with an NCAA provisional time of 9:23.53.
Junior Andrew Norman (Maple Grove, Minn.) claimed an NCAA provisional mark of his own with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault (4.75 meters).
