SJU Finishes Sixth at MIAC Outdoor Championships

WINONA, Minn. – Five Johnnies earned All-MIAC honors (top three) as Saint John's finished sixth out of 11 teams at the 2010 MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 15, in Winona.

The sixth-place finish is the lowest for SJU at the MIAC Outdoor Championships since 1965 (seventh).

SJU claimed the top three spots, with three NCAA provisional marks, in the discus as sophomore Wade Powers (Hawick, Minn./New London-Spicer) claimed the MIAC title with a toss of 48.59 meters. Juniors Tim Juba (Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and Griffin Hayes (Mendota Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) followed closely in second (47.29 meters) and third (47.26 meters), respectively. He was named to the 2010 All-MIAC Sportsmanship team. Powers also took sixth in the shot put (15.06 meters).

Junior Dustin Franta (La Crescent, Minn.) earned All-MIAC honors with a second-place finish in the 10,000 meters (31:55.23). He missed the MIAC title by 0:03.80. Senior Patrick Lowder (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) earned All-MIAC honors with a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:25.56).

Sophomore Rob Floren (Kenyon, Minn./Kenyon-Wanamingo) claimed fourth in the long jump with a distance of 6.40 meters. Fellow sophomore Ruairi Moynihan (Fargo, N.D./South) also finished fourth, in the 1,500 meters (3:58.75). Franta and Moynihan claimed seventh (15:22.26) and ninth (15:31.50), respectively, in the 5,000 meters.

The Johnnies also finished second in the 4x800-meter relay with a time of 7:45.72, 0:01.23 behind champion St. Olaf.
