Giorgi Named National Freshman of the Year, Three Named All-American

HERSHEY, Pa. – Saint John's University freshman Mark Giorgi (Red Wing, Minn.) earned the 2010 Phil Mickelson Award, presented by the Phil and Amy Mickelson Foundation, as the most outstanding freshman in Division III men's golf on Friday, May 14. In addition, Giorgi and senior Ben Vangsness (Alexandria, Minn.) were named to the Division III PING All-America second team and sophomore Tony Krogen (Marshall, Minn.) was named to the third team.

The 2010 MIAC and Central Region Freshman of the Year, Giorgi (george-ee) posted a three-under par 69, thanks to six birdies, to lead SJU in the final round of the NCAA Division III Championship. He tied for 13th overall with a 294 (+7). His best finish was tying for medalist honors at Gustavus' Twin Cities Classic in the Johnnies' final tournament of the fall. He was runner-up at the SJU Spring Invitational and carded top-five finishes at the MIAC Men's Championship (t-third), Gustavus Invitational (fourth) and the Wis.-Eau Claire Invitational (t-third). Giorgi also finished in the top 10 in two other events and only finished out of the top 10 twice all season.

Vangsness ended his collegiate career with a one-under par 71 in the final round to also tie for 13th overall. He ended the season with a 74.0 stroke average in 22 rounds of play (76.83 average in 77 career rounds) with six top 10 finishes in 10 events.

The 2010 MIAC Player of the Year, Krogen won the 2009 MIAC Championships at Bunker Hills, setting the tournament record by shooting a three-under par 213 during the 54-hole event. He also won the SJU Spring Invitational with a three-under par total during that 54-hole meet. Krogen led the MIAC with a 73.7 stroke average in 22 rounds. He had five top-eight finishes in nine events this season.

SJU has now had 21 All-America selections in the last 11 seasons.
