Johnnies End Spring Trip With Narrow 4-3 Loss

CHANDLER, Ariz. – Saint John’s ended its spring break trip with a 4-3 loss to Wartburg (Iowa) on Sunday, March 7. The second game of the doubleheader was cancelled due to rain.

Senior Andrew Gurbada (Royalton, Minn.) and junior Matt Butorac (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the Johnnies (6-3, 0-0 MIAC) with two hits apiece, while Butorac smacked his seventh double of the season. Senior Kyle Henkemeyer (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) gave SJU a 3-1 lead on a two-run single in the second inning, but the Knights (2-3, 0-0 IIAC) added three runs in the bottom half of the inning.

Junior Brett Kramer (Baxter, Minn./Brainerd) went the distance, allowing four runs, three earned, on six hits and struck out five.

The Johnnies out-hit Wartburg 8-6 in the game but left nine men on base and batted .214 (3-14) with a runner on and .222 (2-9) with a runner in scoring position.

SJU returns to action Wednesday, March 17, against Bethany Lutheran. The doubleheader is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the H.H.H. Metrodome in Minneapolis.
