COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University sophomore Matt Pfarr (Le Sueur, Minn./Le Sueur-Henderson) and junior John Vaith (Hastings, Minn.) were named 2009-10 National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-Americans on Tuesday, March 16.
The Johnnies have now had at least one wrestler named an NWCA Scholar All-American six of the last seven seasons.
A biology major (pre-medicine emphasis) with a 3.85 GPA over the last two semesters (3.83 cumulative GPA), Pfarr was ranked in the Top 10 nationally for the majority of the season at 174 pounds and posted a 15-8 record with a sixth-place finish at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
Vaith (vite) is a management major with a 3.33 GPA over the last two semesters (3.01 cumulative GPA). He posted a 16-14 record in 2009-10 and finished fourth in the 157-pound bracket at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional.
To be eligible athletically, the wrestler must meet one of the three criteria: be a 2010 national qualifier with a minimum .500 won/loss record; have placed at the national qualifying tournament (at least sixth at the Great Lakes Regional) and have competed in at least half of the institution's NCAA sanctioned events; or have a minimum .670 win/loss record and have competed in at least half of the institution's NCAA sanctioned events.
Academically, the wrestler must have a 3.2 GPA for the previous full academic year.
