Third-Period Woes Continue in 5-2 Loss

ST. PAUL, Minn. – No. 10 Hamline scored the game’s final two goals, including an empty-netter with 30 seconds left, to defeat Saint John’s 5-2 on Saturday, Feb. 6, in St. Paul.

Senior Jake Koehler (Ramsey, Minn.) gave SJU (6-11-4, 2-8-2 MIAC) a 1-0 lead with a shorthanded tally 2:56 into the game.

Brian Arrigoni tied the game at 1-1 with a shorthanded goal of his own six minutes later. The Pipers (14-4-3, 9-2-1 MIAC) extended their lead to 3-1 in the second period before freshman Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) cut the deficit to 3-2 with his sixth goal of the season 8:32 into the third frame. Senior Gabriel Harren (Warroad, Minn.) and junior Jared Smith (Grand Rapids, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play.

Hamline answered, however, with a quick strike from Kurr just 17 seconds later. Arrigoni then added an empty-net goal in the game’s final minute to end the scoring.

Sophomore Tony Civello (Shoreview, Minn.) made 22 saves in the loss.

SJU, which entered the game fourth in the MIAC with a 19.3 power-play percentage (21-109) was 0-for-6 on the man advantage. The two teams combined for 23 penalties for 68 minutes in the game.

The Johnnies return to action this Friday, Feb. 10, at Saint Mary’s (1-19-1, 1-11-0 MIAC). The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona.
