Johnnies Finish Fourth, Sophomores Collect All-MIAC Honors

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Saint John's finished fourth out of eight teams at the 2010 MIAC Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday, Feb. 20.

St. Thomas won its first MIAC men's title since 1953-54 with a total of 709 points. Gustavus Adolphus was close behind with 701 points, followed by St. Olaf (615.5) and SJU (542.5).

Sophomore Wes Schlichting (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) earned All-MIAC honors with a second-place finish, an NCAA provisional mark of 444.25 points, in the 3-meter dive. Sophomore Josh Seaburg (Moorhead, Minn.) earned his second All-MIAC honor with a second-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (1:56.51), while fellow sophomore Jesse Otis (West Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) earned All-MIAC honors of his own with a third-place showing in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:09.05.

Sophomore Jimmy Foley (Moorhead, Minn.) finished fifth in the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:31.58), while sophomore Ty Nimens (Crookston, Minn.) claimed fifth in the 100-yard freestyle (47.09).

On Friday, Seaburg earned All-MIAC honors with a third-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley with an NCAA provisional time of 4:07.19. Sophomore Ty Nimens (Crookston, Minn.) missed All-MIAC honors for the second time in as many nights by 00:00.31 in the 200-yard freestyle (1:42.84). Foley and freshman Ben Maakestad (Minneapolis, Minn./Edina) followed close behind in fifth (1:44.57) and seventh (1:46.21), respectively.

Otis claimed fifth place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.26, 00:00.90 away from All-MIAC honors. Junior Andy Happe (Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) took fifth in the 100-yard backstroke, just 00:00.47 off the All-MIAC pace.

On Thursday night, Nimens earned All-MIAC honors with a second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley with an NCAA provisional time of 1:54.95. He became the first Johnnies to earn All-MIAC honors in a swimming event (non-diving) since 2006 (Casey Larson, MIAC champion in the 100-yard breaststroke). Seaburg, meanwhile, just missed All-MIAC honors of his own by 00:00.89 to finish fourth.

Schlichting and junior Marcus Rien (Richmond, Minn./Rocori) finished fourth (395.15) and fifth (378.60), respectively in the 1-meter dive. Sophomore Kelley Burg (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart) claimed seventh (363.40).

Senior Doug Donaldson (Andover, Minn./Coon Rapids) was named to the All-MIAC Sportsmanship Team.
