The SJU Nordic ski team travels to Marquette, Mich., for the NCAA Qualifier No. 4 this Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 13-14.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's tied for fifth in the 10k classic and finished sixth in the 15k freestyle at the NCAA Qualifier No. 3 at Telemark Lodge two weeks ago. Senior Trevor Drake (Eden Prairie, Minn.) led SJU with a 20th-place finish (33:03), followed by sophomores Grant Cook (Duluth, Minn./East) and Bob Gerten (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) in 23rd (33:10) and 29th (34:02), respectively, in Saturday's 10k classic race. Junior Jared Sundstrom (Proctor, Minn.) led the Johnnies with a 15th-place finish (42:00) in the 15k freestyle race on Sunday. Gerten claimed 17th (42:11), while Cook finished 21st (42:33).
NCAA QUALIFIER NO. 4: The 2010 NCAA Qualifier No. 4 is one of the four sets of NCAA qualifying races which will determine the eight men who will participate at the NCAA Championships March 10-13 in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Along with SJU, other teams that will be competing include Alaska-Fairbanks, Gogebic Community College, Gustavus Adolphus, Michigan Tech, Northern Michigan, St. Olaf, St. Scholastica, and Wis.-Green Bay.
LAST YEAR'S NCAA QUALIFIER NO. 4: Cook led the Johnnies with a 19th-place finish (27:42) in Saturday's 10k classic and a 17th-place finish (49:00) in Sunday's 20k freestyle at last year's NCAA Qualifier No. 4 held at Camp Ripley near Little Falls. Gerten followed in 26th (28:50) and 33rd (51:32), while Sundstrom claimed 34th (29:45) and 42nd (53:36) on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
