The Saint John’s University swimming and diving team returns to action this Saturday, Jan. 9, by hosting the annual CSB/SJU Winter Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin with diving at 10 a.m., followed by swimming at 12:30 p.m., at the Warner Palaestra Pool in Collegeville.
A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s returns to competitive action this weekend for the first time since Dec. 12. Saint John’s posted six individual wins but fell to St. Thomas 176-143 on that day in Collegeville. Each team recorded top-two finishes in 15 of the 16 events. Sophomore Jesse Otis (West Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) won both the 100- (1:01.38) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.73), while fellow sophomore Ty Nimens (Crookston, Minn.) took first-place honors in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.07). Nimens was named the MIAC Men’s Swimming and Diving Athlete of the Week two days later. Junior Michael Williams (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Nimens went 1-2 in the 100-yard freestyle, and sophomore Jimmy Foley (Moorhead, Minn.) claimed first in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.62). Junior Marcus Rien (Richmond, Minn./Rocori) won the 1-meter dive (246.05), while sophomore Wes Schlichting (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) won the 3-meter with 238 points.
WHO WILL BE THERE: Gustavus Adolphus, St. Cloud State and St. Thomas are expected to compete in this Saturday’s meet on the men’s side.
