Three SJU Hockey Student-Athletes Earn Academic All-MIAC Honors

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Three Saint John’s University hockey student-athletes earned 2008-09 Winter and Spring Academic All-MIAC honors June 25: junior forward Chris Murray (Chanhassen, Minn./Blake), senior defenseman Lance Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn./St. Cloud Tech) and senior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn./St. Cloud Tech).

An economics and accounting double-major with a 3.59 GPA, Murray totaled seven points (3g/4a) in 23 games for SJU this winter.

A three-time Academic All-MIAC honoree, Lance Wheeler played all 25 games and recorded six points (0g/6a) for the Johnnies in 2008-09. Wheeler is a physics major with a 3.66 GPA.

Vince Wheeler posted a 10-9-1 record with a career-high .903 save percentage in 21 games between the pipes this past winter. Wheeler ended his career with a 30-31-5 record, including a 2.93 GAA and a .892 save percentage in 69 games for the Johnnies. A three-time Academic All-MIAC honoree, Wheeler is a mathematics major (pre-engineering emphasis) with a 3.82 GPA.

The Johnnies finished seventh in the MIAC with a 7-8-1 record and a 10-14-1 overall record under the direction of first-year head coach Doug Schueller.

Student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior, or senior academically with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50 on a 4.00 scale to qualify for Academic All-MIAC recognition. Athletically, student-athletes in basketball, hockey, baseball, softball and tennis must compete in 50 percent of their team’s varsity regular season contests. Swimming & diving and track & field student-athletes must qualify for the conference finals to be eligible.
