The article describes the research of Dr. Ronald Hoekstra, a neonatologist at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota (CHCM). Dr. Hoekstra has followed 156 micro preemies, since their birth documenting their progress into young adulthood. Dr. Hoekstra’s unique data looks at how these former micro preemies, born between 1986 and 1990, some as early as 23 weeks gestation, are functioning physically, educationally and socially in the real world as adults.

Engholm, born at 26 weeks in 1990 at 2 lbs. 2 oz, spent 66 days in the hospital and was on life support for the first two weeks. Engholm is now 6-0, 215 pounds and played on special teams during his freshman season at SJU in 2008.
