ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Eleven different Johnnies recorded a point as Saint John’s defeated Finlandia (Mich.) 7-3 on Sunday, Dec. 13, in St. Cloud.
Following a scoreless first period, both team combined for seven goals in the second frame.
The Lions (2-8-0, 2-6-0 MCHA) took a 1-0 lead eight minutes in on a breakaway.
The Johnnies (5-7-1, 1-5-0 MIAC) tied the game a minute later with a goal from sophomore Grant Ellena (Coon Rapids, Minn.), his fourth of the season. Senior Jake Koehler (Ramsey, Minn.) and junior Alex Lindeberg (Forest Lake, Minn.) assisted on the play.
Senior Chris Murray (Chanhassen, Minn.) increased the Johnnies’ lead to 2-1 with a breakaway goal, shorthanded 56 seconds later.
Finlandia tied the game at 2-2 at the 13:03 mark, before Lindeberg and freshman Joe Harren (Warroad, Minn.) added a pair of goals to make it 4-2. The Lions cut their deficit to 4-3 with 12 seconds left in the period.
SJU added three more goals in the third period. Sophomore Jeff Lesmeister (Anoka, Minn.) scored his first career goal 10:06 in, while freshman Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) tallied his fourth goal of the season 24 seconds later. Koehler ended the scoring with his second goal of the season with 6:29 remaining.
Ellena and Lindeberg ended the contest with a goal and two assists each.
Freshman Adam Andersson (Pixbo, Sweden) made 16 saves to record his first career win in his first career start.
SJU outshot Finlandia 55-19 in the game, including an 18-4 advantage on the power play, though neither team lit the lamp with the man advantage (SJU: 0-6, FU: 0-5).
The Johnnies return to action on Friday, Jan. 8, against Wis.-Stevens Point. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud.
