ADRIAN, Mich. – Saint John’s took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play with 5:07 remaining to defeat Buffalo State (N.Y.) 5-4 on Saturday, Nov. 28, in Adrian, Mich.

With a 4-3 lead late in the third period, Buffalo State took a pair of two-minute minor penalties at the 14:53 mark. Senior Karl Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.) scored his second power-play goal of the game to tie it at 4-4 with 43 seconds left on the 5-on-3 advantage. Freshman Michael Palmiscno (East Grand Forks, Minn.) then netted the game-winner 32 seconds later.

The Bengals (2-8-1, 1-6-0 SUNYAC) took an early 1-0 with a goal 7:26 into the game. Gilbert tied the game, the first time around, with an unassisted power-play goal 20 seconds into the second period.

Junior Mike Wallgren (Oakdale, Minn.) added a power-play goal seven minutes later. Freshman Joe Harren (Warroad, Minn.) increased SJU’s lead to 3-1 with a shorthanded goal, his second of the season, at the 14:07 mark of the second period.

Buffalo State proceeded to score three consecutive goals to take a 4-3 lead before creating the 5-on-3 power play for SJU late in the third frame. A penalty on Palmiscno, combined with an extra attacker due to a pulled goaltender, gave the Bengals a 6-on-4 advantage for the final 1:04. SJU, however, was able to pull out the victory.

Senior Stu Van Ess (Kewaskum, Wis.) made 26 stops to improve his record to 3-2-1 on the season.

Gilbert and Palmiscno tallied three points apiece as seven different Johnnies tallied a point in the game.

The Johnnies (4-5-1, 1-3-0 MIAC) return home to conference action against Augsburg this Friday, Dec. 4. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
