Smith Earns 700th Career Win With 81-79 Victory

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John's University head coach Jim Smith became the second coach in NCAA Division III history and the 27th coach in all of college basketball to record 700 career wins as the Johnnies defeated NCAA Division II MSU-Moorhead 81-79 on Saturday, Nov. 21, in St. Cloud.

Sophomore Andrew Latzke (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) led all scorers with a career-high 27 points, 21 of which came from behind the arc. Junior Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) and sophomore Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) added 13 apiece, while junior Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) tallied nine points, nine assists and eight rebounds.

Jake Driscoll led the Dragons (1-2, 0-0 NSIC) with 24 points.

SJU shot a blistering 72.0 percent (18-25) from the field in the first half and ended the game with a .750 shooting percentage from three-point range (12-16).

The Johnnies (1-2, 0-0 MIAC) continue non-conference play by traveling to face Wis.-Eau Claire this Friday, Nov. 27, in Oshkosh, Wis. SJU will then play the host Titans on Saturday, Nov. 28.
