Johnnies Travel to Iowa for NCAA Central Regional Saturday

The Saint John's cross country team travels to compete at the NCAA Central Regional this Saturday, Nov. 14. The race is scheduled for noon at Oakland Acres Golf Club in Grinnell, Iowa. - Regional Website

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John's finished second out of seven teams at the annual SJU Fall Finale on Nov. 6. South Dakota State won the race with a total of 25 points, followed by SJU (43), North Central (103), Bethel (109) and Martin Luther (121). Junior Tom Hoffman (Mahtomedi, Minn.) led the Johnnies with a 12th-place finish overall (fifth collegiately) with a time of 26:53. Seniors Matt Harren (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) and Josh Gunderson (Austin, Minn./Pacelli) finished 14th (sixth; 27:08) and 16th (eighth; 27:29), respectively. Sophomore Jordan Fladland (Coon Rapids, Minn.) took 19th (11th; 27:52), while senior Joe Kilkus (Winona, Minn./Cotter) claimed 23rd (13th; 28:04). Sophomore Steven Lubner (Oconomowoc, Wis.) and senior Tyler Etheridge (Eau Claire, Wis./North) rounded out the Johnnies' seven with 27th- (17th; 28:10) and 30th-places (19th; 28:21), respectively. - Results

LAST YEAR'S NCAA CENTRAL REGIONAL: SJU finished second out of 26 teams at last year's NCAA Division III Central Regional, held Nov. 15, 2008, in Grinnell, Iowa. The Johnnies finished ahead of MIAC-champion St. Olaf (third), St. Thomas (sixth), Bethel (eighth), Hamline (ninth) and Carleton (10th) to earn an invitation to the 2008 NCAA Division III national championship.  Seniors Andrew Stevens (Stillwater, Minn.) and Ryan Noack (St. Cloud, Minn./Cathedral) finished 21st (26:15) and 26th (26:28), respectively.  Junior Dustin Franta (La Crescent, Minn.) claimed 37th place in a time of 26:43, while senior Patrick Lowder (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) followed in 39th with a time of 26:45.  SJU finished with 139 points in a total time of 2:12:22, nine points behind regional-champion Nebraska Wesleyan (2:11:50). The second-place finish is the best for the Johnnies since they finished second at the 1999 regional. - Results

THIS YEAR'S NCAA CENTRAL REGIONAL: The Johnnies will be sending sophomores Fladland, Andrew Clasen (Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) and Ruairi Moynihan (Fargo, N.D./South), as well as juniors Franta, Hoffman and David Forster (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins), and seniors Harren, Lowder, Noack and Stevens to compete at this year's NCAA Central Regional.  Other teams competing include Augsburg, Bethel, Buena Vista (Iowa), Carleton, Central (Iowa), Coe (Iowa), Concordia-Moorhead,  Cornell (Iowa), Crown, Grinnell (Iowa), Gustavus Adolphus, Hamline, Loras (Iowa), Luther (Iowa), Macalester, Martin Luther, Minnesota-Morris, Nebraska Wesleyan, Saint Mary's,  St. Olaf, St. Scholastica, St. Thomas, Simpson (Iowa) and Wartburg (Iowa).
