No. 6 Saint John’s ends the fall portion of its 2009-10 schedule at the Twin Cities Classic, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus, this Saturday-Monday, Oct. 10-12. Round 1: Elk River C.C. (Elk River) | Round 2: Links at Northfork (Ramsey) | Round 3: Wayzata C.C. (Wayzata)

A LOOK AT THE JOHNNIES: Saint John’s won its fifth MIAC Men’s Golf Championship in the last six years with a three-day total of 880 (+16) on Monday, Oct. 5. The title clinched the Johnnies’ 11th consecutive trip to the NCAA Division III Championship May 11-14 in Hershey, Pa. Sophomore Tony Krogen (Marshall, Minn.) became the eighth Johnnie in school history to earn medalist honors with a three-day total of 213 (-3). His 213 is the best 54-hole total in MIAC Championship history, edging Joe Schoolmeesters’ 2006 total of 214. Krogen was named the MIAC Men’s Golf Athlete of the Week for his performance. Freshman Mark Giorgi (Red Wing, Minn.) and senior Ben Vangsness (Alexandria, Minn.) also earned All-MIAC honors (finish in the top 10, including ties). Giorgi tied for third overall with a 223 (+7), while Vangsness fired an even-par 72 to tie for eighth with a 226 (+10). Freshman Dennis Granath (Bandhagen, Sweden/Farsta Gymnasium) claimed 12th with a 227 (+11) and junior Ben Cahill rounded out the Johnnies’ five with a 229 (+13).

LAST YEAR’S TWIN CITIES CLASSIC: The Johnnies finished second out of 23 teams at the 2008 Twin Cities Classic. Senior Joe Daly finished second overall with a three-round total of 215 (-1). SJU (874, +10) finished four strokes behind Illinois Wesleyan (870, +6), and 20 strokes ahead of Central (Iowa), Luther (Iowa) and Wis.-Stout, which all tied for third with an 894 (+30). Senior Joe Schoolmeesters tied for sixth overall with a 218 (+2), while sophomore Ben Cahill tied for ninth with a 220 (+4). - Results

THIS YEAR’S TWIN CITIES CLASSIC: This year’s Twin Cities Classic features 24 teams from 22 institutions, including SJU: Augsburg, Bethel, Buena Vista (Iowa), Carleton, Carthage (Wis.), Central (Iowa), Concordia-Moorhead, Concordia-St. Paul, Gustavus Adolphus, Illinois Wesleyan, Loras (Iowa), Luther (Iowa), Macalester, Manitoba, Nebraska Wesleyan, St. Cloud State, Saint Mary’s, St. Olaf, St. Thomas, Wis.-Eau Claire and Wartburg (Iowa). The Johnnies have finished in the top two each of the last eight Twin Cities Classics.
