COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Thirteen Saint John’s University football student-athletes received Academic All-MIAC recognition Thursday, Jan. 29.
In order to qualify for MIAC Academic All-Conference recognition student-athletes must be a sophomore, junior, or senior with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Athletically, student-athletes in football must compete in 50% of their team’s varsity regular season contests.
- Senior defensive lineman Eric Buss (Coon Rapids, Minn.), a mathematics and physics double-major with a 3.78 GPA.
- Senior linebacker Alex Coughlin (La Crosse, Wis./Aquinas), a communication major with a 3.50 GPA.
- Junior offensive lineman Ben Dimond (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka), a psychology major with a 3.65 GPA.
- Junior linebacker Ethan Eid (Arden Hills, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall), a philosophy and economics double-major with a 3.70.
- Sophomore offensive lineman Jeff Gilbertson (Wabasha, Minn./Winona Cotter), a biology major with a 3.88 GPA.
- Junior defensive back Dominic Haik (Minneapolis, Minn./Totino-Grace), a political science major with a 3.70 GPA.
- Sophomore linebacker Aaron Hildebrand (Plymouth, Minn./ Totino-Grace), a management major with a 3.50 GPA.
- Sophomore offensive lineman Erik Kottom (Eden Prairie, Minn.), a History major with a 3.75 GPA.
- Junior offensive lineman Drew Percival (Wayzata, Minn./Blake), an accounting major with a 3.50 GPA.
- Senior running back Jeff Schnobrich (New Ulm, Minn./Cathedral), a political science major with a 3.91 GPA.
- Junior defensive lineman Jimmy Sharpe (Plymouth, Minn./ Wayzata), a management major with a 3.50 GPA.
- Junior offensive lineman Greg Sowden (Brooklyn Park, Minn./ Park Center), an English major with a 3.65 GPA.
- Sophomore running back Bryan Virnig (Pierz, Minn.), a biology (pre-pharmacy emphasis) major with a 3.92 GPA.
SJU ended the 2008 season with an 8-3 overall record and a 6-2 record in the MIAC. The Johnnies earned its MIAC-record 30th conference championship, the 26th title under the direction head coach John Gagliardi, and made their 23rd postseason appearance (19th appearance in the NCAA Division III playoffs). Gagliardi ended his record 60th season with a 461-125-11 (.781) career record and a 437-119-10 (.781) record in 56 seasons at SJU.
