COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's held on to defeat Carleton 65-63 Saturday, Jan. 24 in Collegeville.
Freshman point guard Andy Burns (Shorewood, Minn./Minnetonka) led the Johnnies (8-9, 6-6 MIAC) with 13 points and a career-high 10 assists to record his first career double-double. It was the first points-assists double-double for SJU since current assistant coach Pat McKenzie recorded 14 points and 11 assists against St. Olaf on Feb. 5, 2003.
Sophomore wing Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) added 12 points off the bench, while freshman wing Aaron Barmore (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson) and senior wing Cole Isetts (Red Wing, Minn.) added 11 points apiece. Sophomore wing Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) was one point shy of his fifth double-double of the season with nine points and 11 rebounds.
Zach Johnson and Seth Jonker scored 15 points each to lead Carleton (11-5, 7-4 MIAC).
With the victory, SJU head coach Jim Smith is now seven wins away from 700 for his career with a 693-484 record in 45 seasons.
The Johnnies return to action next Saturday, Jan. 31 as they travel to face Saint Mary's. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Saint Mary's Fieldhouse in Winona.
