COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John's University named Doug Schueller its head hockey coach May 16. Schueller (SHU-ler) becomes the 22nd head coach in the 76-year history of Johnnie hockey and replaces John Harrington, who resigned in March following 15 seasons at SJU. Schueller recently served as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I Bowling Green State University the past two seasons and was responsible for the Falcons' defense and recruiting efforts.
A 2001 graduate of Bowling Green and a three-time captain for the Falcons, Schueller was an assistant coach with the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United State Hockey League (USHL) during the 2005-06 season. Schueller helped coach the Stampede to a 43-13-4 (.750) record and the Anderson Cup championship. Schueller worked primarily with the Stampede defense that finished first overall in the USHL and set a franchise record for fewest goals allowed in a season with 135. He also helped six defenseman secure NCAA Division I scholarships. Prior to his time with the Stampede, Schueller played three years in the American Hockey League (AHL) and the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL).
As a student-athlete at Bowling Green, the Inver Grove Heights, Minn., native played in 138 career games, recording 16 goals and 30 assists as a defenseman. Schueller was an assistant captain for the Falcons as a sophomore during the 1998-99 season and then wore the captain's "C" in both the 1999-00 and 2000-01 seasons, with the Falcons advancing to the CCHA semifinals his senior year.
Schueller graduated from Bowling Green with a degree in sports management and finished his Falcon career with a 3.59 grade-point average. He went on to complete his master's degree (business administration in sports management) from the University of Coventry Business School in 2005.
Saint John's made its 12th Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff appearance in the last 13 years with an 8-6-2 conference record and a 13-12-2 record overall in the 2007-08 season.
