COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Saint John’s University opened its 2008-09 season with a second-place finish out of five teams at the annual CSB/SJU Fall Invitational Saturday, Nov. 15 in Collegeville. Luther (Iowa) won the men’s competition with a total of 806.5 points, followed by SJU (698), St. Thomas (649.5), St. Cloud State (337) and Hamline (132).
Freshman Ty Nimens (Crookston, Minn.) won the 200-yard butterfly (2:03.30), 200-yard individual medley (2:01.36) and 500-yard freestyle (5:06.13) events to lead the Johnnies. Freshman Wes Schlichting (Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice) won both the one-meter (213.34) and three-meter (220.55) diving events.
Freshman Jesse Otis (West Des Moines, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:01.75), 100-yard butterfly (54.91) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.48). Sophomore Michael Williams (Maple Grove, Minn.) claimed third place in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.24), third in the 100-yard freestyle (49.62) and fourth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.28).
Freshman Jimmy Foley (Moorhead, Minn.) took second in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.70) and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.34). Freshman Kelly Burg (Grand Forks, N.D./Sacred Heart) finished third (180.95) and fourth (182.25) in the one- and three-meter dives, respectively, while sophomore Andy Happe (Urbandale, Iowa/Dowling Catholic) claimed third place in the 200-yard backstroke (2:04.73).
The Johnnies return to action by hosting the SJU Triangular next Saturday, Nov. 22. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Warner Palaestra Pool in Collegeville.
