Johnnie Basketball Falls at No. 6 Wis.-Stevens Point in Season Opener

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Five different Pointers scored in double-figures as No. 6 Wis.-Stevens Point defeated Saint John’s 97-70 Saturday, Nov. 15 in Stevens Point, Wis. The game was the 2008-09 season opener for both teams.

Sophomore wing Chris Schwartz (Sioux Falls, S.D./Lincoln) led the Johnnies with 23 points, followed by sophomore wing Todd Herman (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer) with 18 points. Sophomore wing Aaron Burtzel (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori) posted 14 points and 12 rebounds for SJU (0-1, 0-0 MIAC), which shot just 25.0% in the second half. The Johnnies, however, were a perfect 20 of 20 from the free-throw line in the game.

UWSP’s Pete Rortvedt led the nationally-ranked Pointers with 22 points, including six three-pointers.

Alumni, parents and other fans are invited to salute long-time SJU coach, Jim Smith, and his wife at the dedication of Jim and Adrienne Smith Court in Sexton Arena next Saturday, Nov. 22. The 7:15 p.m. dedication ceremony will be followed by the Johnnies’ home opener against local rival, St. Cloud State.
