No. 7 St. Norbert Edges SJU, 3-2

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Saint John’s outshot No. 7 St. Norbert 32-21 in the game but were just 2 of 10 on the power play as the Green Knights edged the Johnnies 3-2 on Sunday, Nov. 11 in St. Cloud.

SNC jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Marc Belanger and Dustin Dubas (power play) as the Green Knights (4-1-0, 0-0-0 NCHA) outshot SJU 10-6 in the opening period. The Johnnies, however, increased their offensive intensity in the final two periods as they boasted a 26-11 shot advantage.

Senior defenseman Nate Meinz (St. Cloud, Minn.) cut the deficit to 2-1 with a power play goal 3:36 into the second period with assists going to senior forwards Pat Eagles (Falcon Heights, Minn.) and Tom Freeman (Eagan, Minn.). Sophomore forward Karl Gilbert (Hermantown, Minn.) tied the game and 2-2 less than six minutes later with another power play goal. Junior forward Pat Connelly (Birchwood, Minn.) and freshman defenseman James Olmscheid (St. Cloud, Minn.) assisted on the scoring play for SJU.

SNC’s Steven Sleep scored the go-ahead goal and what proved to be the game winner at the 18:38 mark of the second period.

SJU had a man advantage for the final 3:26 of the third period, including a 6-on-4 during the final minute but failed to get the puck past goaltender Kyle Jones. Jones made 30 saves to improve his record to 2-1-0 on the young season.

Junior goaltender Vince Wheeler (Clearwater, Minn.) made 18 saves for SJU.

Saint John’s (2-2-0, 0-0-0 MIAC) will begin conference action Friday, Nov. 16 at Saint Mary’s. The puck is set to drop at 7:05 p.m. at the SMU Ice Arena in Winona.
